Our journey into this world begins long before birth, much like our end of life journey begins organically long before death. Often the journey is made longer thanks to advances in medical science, improved nutrition and increased emphasis on mental and physical health awareness.

When thinking of end of life, seniors may come to mind; however, that is not always the reality. End of life greets us all sooner or later, across all age groups. Sometimes, the end of life realm encompasses both birth and death at the same time, for example. Life does not always go according to plan. An End of Life Doula (EOLD) can help ease the transition from one life stage to the next.

Your end of life health - care wishes must be expressed in advance. Otherwise, during an extremely stressful time family members may be called upon to make decisions regarding treatment for their parents, children or spouse. Family members may not always agree as to the best course of action, causing unnecessary conflict. Advance Care Planning (ACP) brings peace of mind to both you and your loved ones.

A good place to start is to:

Think about your own values, beliefs and wishes
Discuss and explore options and avenues with your End of Life Doula and loved ones before a sudden life-limiting diagnosis or serious injury occurs
Your End of Life Doula can help you create an Advance Care Plan specifying your wishes
Share your plan with family, friends, and your doctor (Your ACP can be updated at at any time)

Among other services, your EOL Doula can help document your Advance Care Plan to ensure that your voice is heard by doctors and other health care professionals entrusted with your care.
